Providing shelters over existing cycle parking for a new Academy
Oasis Academy Wintringham is a large Academy school built on the site of an existing comprehensive school. They had some cycle parking but the Sheffield stands had no shelter so Lockit-Safe were asked to provide shelters over the existing cycle parking area plus provide additional cycle parking for 24 bikes.
The size of the cycle shelters (and therefore their weight) required extensive ground preparation works plus installation challenges not usually associated with a shelter installation.
THE SOLUTION
One of the main issues was the potential wind and snow loads that could be placed on the shelters and its foundations. Because of this Lockit-safe had to carry out extensive groundworks to withstand this load.
The cycle shelter was to cover a total area of approximately 20m x 15m and the steelwork itself weighed 7 ton and had to be structurally designed and calculated.
- All steelwork was galvanised and polyester powder coated
- Installed with the use of mechanical lifting plant due to the weight of certain steel sections
- Polycarbonate roof spanning 4.8m and covering a double row of cycle stands
- Ground preparation works and installation had to be carried out during school holiday period
In total the project provided covered cycle parking for 156 bikes at an area near the main entrance to the Academy. All works were completed on time and to the clients total satisfaction.
