Providing two-tier cycle parking for Sheffield Station’s award-winning cycle hub
East Midland Trains invested in the development of Sheffield Station in 2014 and central to this was the improvement of cycle parking for passengers through the creation of a secure Cycle Hub.
THE SOLUTION
The Sheffield Cycle Hub provides 400 cycle parking spaces to passengers with secure access control and CCTV. In addition to the parking there are changing facilities and a cycle shop offering repairs and a cycle hire scheme.
Lockit-safe where asked to install their two tier bike rack system in the Cycle Hub to provide an additional 222 cycle parking spaces. The area by the new hub already had traditional cycle parking spaces but our challenge was to maximise the number of spaces within the footprint available. In order to achieve this we needed to work very closely with the main contractor as the room was being completely renovated with new ceilings and partitioning walls being installed at the same time as the cycle racks.
All the hard work has paid off, however, and we are delighted that Sheffield Station has been recognised as Rail Station of the Year 2014 at the ATOC National Cycle-Rail Awards.
