Installing and upgrading cycle and scooter parking across 21 schools for Transport for London

The first part of the academic year has seen the Transport for London framework take off for schools.

Upgrading the cycle and scooter parking was required across many schools. Each school had its own needs, some had existing cycle shelters and racks that needed removing, many required extensive groundworks and all needed high quality, practical cycle and scooter parking in order to encourage their children to ‘ditch the car’ and use two wheels instead.

THE SOLUTION

Over a 12 week period from September 2013 we installed new cycle compounds and scooter racks  into 21 schools across London. This totalled 350 cycle spaces and 210 scooters spaces. We have visited a further 22 schools and will be installing their new cycle  compounds in the New Year.

Our popular Hamble cycle compound was chosen as the best solution with mesh sliding doors to allow easy access yet keeping the cycles and scooters secure.

The cycle shelters were powder coated after being hot-dipped galvanised which ensures a long life and minimal maintenance. The schools were able to choose the colour of the powder coating to match their school colours.

Any existing cycle parking stands and shelters were removed and any necessary groundworks completed. As part of the groundworks, we installed level concrete bases to ensure the easy movement of the sliding doors.

All bike compounds were installed to strict timescales and with minimum disruption to the running of the schools.

“Just to let you know that our new TFL funded, Lock it Safe constructed Cycle Storage unit is fabulous. It looks sleek and swish and gorgeous and was installed blip free and within agreed timescales during the October half term. Our families were in complete awe on Monday morning. It’s had a special introduction to the school community via our Headteacher Bulletin and already filling up rather nicely.

We are absolutely delighted with it and now have fingers crossed that it will boost numbers of families and their children cycling to school. We can continue our active smarter travel journey courtesy of you guys , hopefully becoming Gold accredited in Summer 2014.”
